Dental Anxiety

How Govani Dental helps relieve fear of the dentist

Video Transcript:

Dr. G: Many patients I’ve noticed have anxiety due to a past experience. So, either they were a baby boomer that had dentistry back in the day when things were not quite the same as they are now, related to making sure patient comfort was addressed.

Dr. C: There are a few things that I try to do when people are nervous. Number one is just try to make their expectations reasonable. Sometimes they come in and they’ve got wild ideas of about what we are going to do when they come into the office. It’s just bringing those expectations into reality.

Dr. G: Are they nervous about the procedure? Or are they nervous or embarrassed about having to have it done. So, talking about those things upfront and working through it, you know, this is a judgment-free zone. We are here to provide a service and to try to build confidence and try to work through those issues. And many patients, if they are open minded and have an open heart to talk with us and be forthcoming, we can really move past some of those issues.

Dr. C: With kids, we’ll have little prizes and things at the end of appointments that they can look forward to. The nice thing about this office, if somebody is really nervous, we do have therapy dogs available that they can have to sit with them and kind of stroke and pet to keep their mind off of what’s going on.

Dr. G: We want patients to be informed, so they can at least have realistic expectations of what their visit will be like.

Our mission: combat dental phobia

Govani Dental’s mission is to be honest and transparent with each patient who walks through the door. Our welcoming atmosphere allows for open communication and zero judgment between patients and providers. We do our best to build patient confidence, especially for those who experience dental anxiety or have a fear of the dentist.

What is dental anxiety or dental phobia?

Dental anxiety or phobia describes a fear, stress or anxiety that becomes apparent within a dental setting. In order to better understand what dental anxiety is, we must look at the causes and signs.

  • Fear of pain
  • Negative past experiences
  • Embarrassment
  • Generalized anxiety or depression
  • Feelings of not being in control

Signs and symptoms

  • Increased nervousness in the waiting room or operatory
  • Increased sweating or heart rate
  • Visible distress
  • Difficulty sleeping the night before an appointment
  • Feeling vulnerable in the chair
  • Completely avoiding the dentist

What can I do to help my dental anxiety?

Avoiding the dentist can result in progressive dental disease and increase the complexity of treatment. Instead, try the following:

  • Be honest with yourself and your dentist
  • Breathe deeply and with control
  • Use distractions, such as music or a stress ball
  • Seek positive reinforcement from family, friends, and your provider
  • Ask questions

We strongly encourage our patients to visit the dentist for regular check-ups and comprehensive care. This allows us to better monitor any changes in your overall oral health.
