Although you may brush at home, getting your teeth cleaned professionally has many benefits. Teeth cleaning can help prevent periodontal disease. Frequent teeth cleaning can help reduce additional gum tissue problems, and keep the disease from progressing. Most importantly, it removes plaque to prevent cavities and gum disease. It also whitens your smile and freshens your breath. We recommend biannual teeth cleanings for optimal oral health.
Fluoride makes the enamel of your teeth more resistant to cavities. It’s a mineral found in most water sources including lakes, rivers and wells; and many community water supplies have fluoride levels optimized for cavity prevention. It can also be found in toothpastes and mouthwash. Dr. Govani recommends biannual fluoride treatments to prevent cavities in children. Sometimes she also recommends fluoride for senior adults, cancer patients, individuals with high cavity rates and those with dry mouth. Your dentist can provide fluoride as a varnish, prescription toothpaste or a take-home fluoride tray. Dr. Govani and her staff will help determine whether you’re a candidate for fluoride treatments.
Dental X-rays are used to see damage and disease a regular visual exam cannot. The human eye can only see 30% of the tooth. X-rays enable Dr. Govani to see important anatomy the eye can not see alone such as the nerve, bone height associated with teeth and ligaments. These X-rays can also be used as a diagnostic tool for comparing your teeth’s current condition to their previous state. All preventative services are based on your current and future health risks. Dr. Govani will determine how often you need dental X-rays based on your age, oral health, signs of disease or decay and risk factors for future dental issues.
Exams can be an excellent preventative measure to make sure dental disease is not missed. Your dental provider will go over dental hygiene and education to help you better maintain your general oral and overall health. Some preventative measures can even be completed during your regular dental exam.
